IBM Talking to Research in Motion Over BlackBery Servers Sale

(10th Aug 2012) Research in Motion is said to have received an approach from IT services giant, IBM to sell its BlackBerry enterprise-services division.

Citing two people familiar with the talks, Bloomberg News said that the approach is for the division, which operates a network of secure servers used to support the BlackBerry emailing and messaging platforms.

It is presumed that IBM would be able to drive down costs by folding the service into its existing hosted IT platforms.

RIM has hired bankers to investigate the possible sale of parts of the company as it struggles to turn around the business. However, it was generally thought that RIM would prefer to sell the handset business and retain the services side.

Bloomberg’s source said that there are no talks underway for the hardware side of the company.
